About this site

4nashi lists restaurants in Japan that don’t use wheat, vegetable oil, dairy or sugar, or that let you order dishes without them. We list restaurants from all over Japan.

This is not an allergy guide

  • Wheat is judged by whether it is used in the food itself. Wheat in soy sauce and other seasonings is not counted. “Wheat: Not used” does not mean gluten-free.
  • We don’t check for cross-contact. Traces may get in from shared cooking equipment or fryers.
  • If you have an allergy or celiac disease, always ask the restaurant yourself before you go and when you order.

Which restaurants are listed

  • We list restaurants that meet the conditions above, even if they don’t advertise it themselves.
  • We record each restaurant as a whole, not each dish.
  • Vegetable oil includes salad oil, olive oil, rice bran oil, sesame oil and every other plant oil.
  • Sugar is judged by whether sugar is used. Mirin (sweet rice wine), honey, fruit and similar sweeteners are not counted, but are mentioned in the notes.

How each item is shown

For each of the four items, a restaurant is marked as one of the following.

  • Not used: not used in the food
  • Can be left out: used, but you can order without it
  • Used: used in the food
  • Not confirmed: not checked yet

Restaurants with unconfirmed items are also listed.

How information is checked

Each listing shows the date it was last checked and how. There are four ways:

  • Checked with the restaurant
  • Checked on the official website or official social media
  • Checked in person
  • From a user post or review site (not checked with the restaurant)

Restaurant information is written in Japanese first and translated into English. If the English and Japanese pages differ, the Japanese page is more up to date.

Not an allergy guide. Wheat in soy sauce and other seasonings is not counted, and traces may get in from shared cooking equipment. Always check with the restaurant before you go.

Our policy

  • Money never changes how a restaurant is rated, where it appears in the list, or whether it is listed.
  • If we start paid listings or ads, they will be labeled “PR” or “Ad”.
